Fire Erupts at Madina Market, Prompting Emergency Response in Accra

On January 21, 2026, a fire broke out at the Madina Market located in the Greater Accra Region, prompting a quick response from local firefighting units. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed the incident via their official Facebook page.

Firefighters from both the Madina and Legon stations were dispatched to the scene to manage the situation. The GNFS reported, “Crews from the Madina and Legon Fire stations are actively engaged in extinguishing the fire that has engulfed parts of the market.”

While the total extent of the damage remains unclear, initial reports suggest that a number of stalls and merchandise may have been lost to the flames. This incident adds to a concerning trend, as the country has experienced numerous fire outbreaks recently.

Data from the GNFS indicates that there were 5,585 fire incidents recorded across Ghana between January and November 2025, affecting both residential and commercial properties. This marks a slight decrease from the 5,596 incidents reported during the same timeframe in the previous year.

The situation is still developing, and further updates will be provided as firefighters continue to manage the emergency.
