Former Presidents to Join Delegates Virtually Amid Travel Constraints
Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will not attend the NPP National Delegates’ Conference in person on Saturday, July 19. Instead, both will connect virtually with the over 5,600 expected delegates at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.
The confirmation came from Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, during an appearance on JoyNews’ AM Show. He explained that the former presidents are “out of jurisdiction on very important matters,” making it impossible for them to be physically present.
Special Envoy Secures Virtual Participation
In response, the NPP’s National Council dispatched a special envoy to engage with the two former leaders. After discussions, both agreed to participate virtually—a decision warmly accepted by the party.
“We accepted their desire to participate but acknowledged the constraints preventing their physical presence,” Rev. Fordjour stated. “Their virtual involvement has been accepted in good faith.”
Importance of Their Continued Leadership
Rev. Fordjour stressed that while they will not be there in person, their guidance and leadership remain vital to the conference. “There’s an adage that says you don’t finish meat without the father,” he said, underscoring their symbolic importance.
The upcoming NPP National Delegates’ Conference marks the party’s first major gathering since its 2023 electoral loss. With tensions and expectations running high, the presence of former Presidents—even virtually—offers a sense of stability and unity.
Virtual Presence to Inspire Delegates
Although absent physically, Rev. Fordjour assured the party faithful that their influence will be felt. “The spirit and virtual presence of our former Presidents will be strongly felt throughout the conference,” he said.
Their participation is expected to inspire hope and direction for the future of the party.
