Ghana bans importation of excavators in bid to curb illegal mining

The government of Ghana has implemented an immediate ban on the importation of excavators in a bid to tackle illegal mining and protect the nation’s water bodies. This directive, issued by the Ministry of Transport, introduces a stringent “No Permit, No Excavator” policy. This move aims to regulate the entry of such machinery into the country, ensuring only authorized equipment is allowed.

Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who is also a Member of Parliament, announced that all shipping lines must cease transporting excavators into Ghana without the necessary permit. The government requires dealers and importers to obtain prior approval from the Ministry of Transport before bringing in any excavators. This initiative is part of the government’s intensified efforts to curb illegal mining activities and preserve essential water resources.

Illegal mining has posed significant environmental threats, notably damaging forest reserves and river basins. Excavators, commonly used in unauthorized mining operations, have been pinpointed as instrumental in these destructive activities. By enforcing this new policy, the government underscores its commitment to imposing stricter controls on mining equipment and practices.

Failure to comply with these directives will lead to legal repercussions for dealers and importers, though specific penalties have yet to be detailed. The Ministry of Transport urges all stakeholders, including the general public, to strictly adhere to the new regulations. This ban is likely to prompt reactions from industry players, particularly in the construction and mining sectors where excavators are vital for legitimate operations. The measure aligns with broader national strategies, such as Operation Halt II, a military-led initiative, to thwart illegal mining activities across the country.
