The Ghana Police Service has apprehended an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service, AICO1 Ahmed Abdul Samad, in connection with the illicit transportation of a significant cache of AK-47 ammunition and bulletproof vests. This incident, which took place in the Ashanti Region, has raised alarms regarding national security.
According to police reports, the Upper East Police had been investigating the case and subsequently requested the release of AICO1 Samad, identifying him as a key suspect in the illegal transfer of 2,600 rounds of live ammunition. The officer was handed over by the Regional Provost of the Bolga Regional Immigration Office.
During police questioning, Samad denied any involvement with the ammunition, asserting that he had merely asked a colleague in Accra to send personal belongings he left behind. He claimed that his requests included a body armor plate, old boots, and other personal items, which were allegedly sent via a vehicle that ended up being intercepted by the police.
In a detailed statement, the police outlined that the interception occurred on December 26, 2025, at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier. A Kia Granbird bus, identified by its registration number GT 5771-18, was stopped while traveling from Accra toward Walewale. Upon inspection, authorities discovered concealed containers holding the substantial quantity of ammunition, along with bulletproof plates and a helmet hidden under the driver’s seat.
The driver of the bus, Kwame Afram, and his mate, Godfred Essel, were taken into custody alongside the vehicle. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this alarming incident, which underscores the challenges faced by security agencies in combating the flow of illegal arms in the region.
