A sharp Ghana pension divide has become apparent in the recently released SSNIT Monthly Pension League Table for 2025. The data reveals that in January 2025 the highest-paid pensioner received GH¢201,792.37, while the lowest recipient was paid only GH¢514.41, exposing a dramatic income gulf in retirement benefits.
This means that the top pensioner’s monthly payment is 392 times greater than the lowest.
Under the 2025 indexation of pensions, those with the lowest pensions saw increases of over 25 per cent, while the pensioners at the top experienced much smaller rises of around 8 per cent.
For example, the top-earner’s pension rose by 8.04 per cent, from GH¢186,777.58 in December 2024 to GH¢201,792.37 in January 2025. In comparison, the pensioner at the bottom saw a jump of 25.74 per cent, from GH¢409.10 to GH¢514.41.
The league tables, titled “Indexation of Pensions 2025,” list both the ten highest and ten lowest pension earners. Among the highest pensioners, monthly pensions reached up to GH¢58,031.91, while among the lowest the payments extended to GH¢669.54.
These figures underscore significant disparities that stem from differences in pre-retirement contributions and earnings, which determine SSNIT pension benefits.
Long after active service ends, this pension gap continues to reflect broader economic inequality for Ghanaians reliant on the national pension scheme.
