Ghanaian Contractors to Drive Big Push, Mahama Explains
President John Dramani Mahama has stressed that Ghanaian contractors to drive Big Push is a deliberate government policy. Launching the programme at Afienya in Greater Accra, he said most of the contractors involved are local firms. The goal is to strengthen domestic construction capacity and deliver quality infrastructure.
Building Local Strength
Mahama explained that contractors were selected after a strict vetting process based on competence and proven track records. According to him, many local firms match the expertise of foreign companies. He added that this approach will promote accountability, ensure timely delivery, and improve durability of national projects.
Role of Foreign Firms
Although the policy focuses on Ghanaian companies, Mahama noted that existing contracts held by foreign firms before his administration will continue. Instead of being canceled, such agreements will be adjusted or integrated into the Big Push to maintain continuity.
Funding and Project Scope
The Big Push has been allocated GH¢13.85 billion this year, with additional funding expected in future budgets. The plan covers 42 road projects and other key infrastructure. Mahama highlighted that contractors must complete all projects within 24 months, preventing unnecessary delays.
Impact on Ghana’s Development
- Local companies will gain experience and resources through large contracts.
- Citizens will benefit from better infrastructure designed for long-term use.
- Faster project completion will support job creation and economic growth.
