Ghanaian Romance Fraudsters Sentenced in UK
Ghanaian romance fraudsters sentenced for £2 million scam received lengthy jail terms after running a sophisticated online dating deception. Between 2017 and 2024, five men targeted dozens of victims across the UK, tricking them into sending money under false pretenses.
How the Fraud Worked
The gang built trust through dating platforms, posing as genuine partners. Once victims believed in the relationship, the criminals invented emergencies such as medical bills or travel costs. Payments went directly into their UK accounts, and in some cases, cash was sent through the mail.
Sentences Delivered
At Guildford Crown Court, the five men faced the following punishments:
- Kwabena Edusei, 37 – 7 years, 10 months
- Michael Quartey, 28 – 5 years, 6 months
- Fawaz Ali, 27 – 4 years, 10 months
- Ebenezer Tackie, 42 – 4 years, 6 months
- George Melseaux, 40 – 3 years, 9 months
Victims Left Devastated
Several victims reported losing homes, life savings, and even relationships with family. Many described deep emotional scars and lasting shame, as they had been manipulated into believing in love.
The court highlighted the calculated nature of the scam, stressing that the men exploited emotions to enrich themselves while laundering millions.
