The Mahama government is set to introduce a new bill in Parliament aimed at renaming the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) along with several other public universities across Ghana.
During the swearing-in ceremony of the CKT-UTAS Governing Council in Accra, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced this significant development. He mentioned that the initiative is part of a broader effort to revisit the names of public universities that were renamed or established during the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
Transforming CKT-UTAS
Established in 2021, CKT-UTAS was designed to equip students with practical and technical skills for the global job market, although it has encountered various infrastructure challenges. The current name of the university has been met with mixed reactions from the public and stakeholders since its inception.
Haruna Iddrisu highlighted that after extensive consultations with academic professionals, traditional leaders, alumni, students, and civil society, a name change for CKT-UTAS seems likely. “The new name will probably align with the university’s original vision and ethos,” he explained.
Renaming Initiative: Not Diminishing Legacies
Iddrisu further clarified that the government’s proposal is not intended to undermine the legacies of the individuals after whom these institutions were named. “This effort aims to reflect the foundational ethos and historical identities of the institutions,” he added.
Other Universities Under Review
As part of this comprehensive initiative, universities like the University of Mines and Technology and Abdulai Salifu University are also being considered for renaming in this bill. The government plans to present this bill to Parliament shortly to commence the formal renaming process.
