The Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has expressed strong disapproval regarding the physical assault of journalist Samuel Addo from Class Media Group by personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service. This incident occurred while the firefighters were managing a blaze at the Kasoa New Market last Sunday.
A video circulating on social media shows the fire service officers assaulting Addo, although the precise circumstances leading to this altercation remain unclear. Witnesses indicate that as firefighters attempted to control the situation and prevent vendors from accessing the market, tensions escalated when they noticed the journalist recording the events.
In response to the incident, Minister Ofosu took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his condemnation. He assured the public that the government would take decisive action against those responsible for this unacceptable behavior. “The attack on Samuel Addo, a journalist from Class Media Group, by certain members of the Ghana National Fire Service is completely intolerable. We will ensure that appropriate measures are taken against those who perpetrated this act,” he stated.
Following the incident, the Ghana National Fire Service issued a press release confirming that an investigation into the matter is currently underway. They described the footage as depicting a confrontation that arose after their personnel were allegedly assaulted by a group, which included an individual suspected of theft, at the fire scene.
While the GNFS condemned any form of violence directed at their team, they also reaffirmed their commitment to uphold professional standards and ensure accountability among their ranks. An internal committee has been formed to thoroughly investigate the incident and ascertain the full details surrounding it. The service has urged the community to remain composed and reassured them of their dedication to transparency in all operations.
