The government has firmly rejected allegations of political persecution in the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Speaking at an urgent press briefing on Wednesday, Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu clarified that the suspension was guided solely by constitutional procedures, not political interests.
Addressing Accusations of Unfair Treatment
This rebuttal came in response to Justice Torkornoo’s earlier public statement in which she criticized the suspension as politically charged and constitutionally questionable. She also expressed her intention not to resign, asserting that doing so would legitimize what she described as a flawed and opaque process.
“If I resign under these circumstances, I will be endorsing a flawed and unknown process. It is not acceptable,” she stated during her press conference.
Justice Torkornoo further warned that ignoring these developments could have damaging consequences for Ghana’s democratic evolution. “This bizarre sequence of events presents a deviation from our democratic path—one we dismiss at our own peril,” she cautioned.
Government’s Standpoint
Felix Kwakye Ofosu reiterated that President John Mahama’s actions were constitutionally grounded and devoid of political motivation. He addressed concerns about Justice Torkornoo’s treatment during the ongoing investigation, noting that the heightened security measures at Osu Castle were standard for high-profile cases—not targeted intimidation.
“The decision was made following due process, and the security arrangements in place are typical for cases involving figures of national importance,” he explained.
Broader Reactions and Ongoing Debate
The suspension has sparked a national debate, with various civil society organizations, legal experts, and political groups weighing in. Some have questioned the transparency and legality of the proceedings, while others have defended the government’s decision.
Meanwhile, calls from groups like the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and other legal experts continue to emphasize the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is not only done but seen to be done.
