Government Updates Curfew Hours in Bawku Municipality

Government Updates Curfew Hours in Bawku Municipality

The government has revised the curfew hours in the Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region. Starting Friday, April 25, 2025, the new curfew hours will be from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

This change was announced by the Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, following recommendations from the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC). The update was formalized through an Executive Instrument.

Initially imposed in February 2025, the curfew was a response to renewed violence stemming from a longstanding chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. The unrest led to fatalities, injuries, and heightened insecurity, necessitating intervention from security agencies to restore order.

The government is urging local chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to show restraint and seek peaceful resolutions to their conflicts. Additionally, a ban on carrying arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons remains active. The Ministry has warned that violations of this ban will result in arrest and prosecution.

Mr. Muntaka-Mubarak affirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with traditional authorities and community members to foster peace in the municipality.
