During a recent ceremony at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), former President John Dramani Mahama recounted the inspiring story of his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, who has become a notable figure in Ghana’s mining sector.
Reflecting on their family’s history, President Mahama explained that during a time of political turmoil, their father was exiled, prompting the family to send Ibrahim and other siblings to England. This decision was made to ensure they received a quality education while staying safe from potential political threats.
In England, Ibrahim developed a keen interest in engineering, often exploring the mechanics of various machines. His passion for technology grew, particularly in aviation and heavy machinery. It was during this period that he encountered a financially struggling Irish contractor. Recognizing a potential opportunity, Ibrahim proposed that they collaborate to establish a business, which eventually led to the formation of Engineers and Planners—a pioneering indigenous mining company in Ghana.
President Mahama highlighted the challenges Ibrahim faced, noting that at the time, Ghanaian businesses were largely excluded from major mining contracts, which were dominated by foreign firms. However, Ibrahim’s company initially secured subcontracting roles, specifically with African Mining Services (AMS), where it quickly earned a reputation for reliability and excellence.
As the company demonstrated its capabilities, it gradually received more significant contracts, paving the way for other indigenous firms to gain recognition and opportunities in the mining sector. This shift marked a significant change in the landscape of Ghana’s mining industry, traditionally controlled by expatriate companies.
President Mahama emphasized that Ibrahim’s journey epitomizes the resilience and innovative spirit of Ghanaians, showing what can be achieved when local talent is given the chance to thrive. He remarked, “Ibrahim’s story illustrates the possibilities that arise when individuals are empowered to pursue their aspirations in challenging environments.”
