Interior Minister reviews curfew hours in Binduri after deadly attack

Following a deadly shooting incident, Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak has revised the curfew hours for Binduri and nearby regions. The curfew now extends from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, based on recommendations from the Upper East Regional Security Council. These changes took effect immediately.

The Ministry of the Interior has issued a statement urging local leaders, elders, youth, and residents to maintain peace and harmony. In an effort to ensure safety, the Ministry has also announced a prohibition on carrying weapons, including firearms and knives. Additionally, wearing smocks—often used to conceal weapons—is now banned. Violators of these rules will face arrest and prosecution.

Furthermore, the use of motorbikes, tricycles, and ‘aboboyaa’ is temporarily forbidden for everyone in the region. These measures aim to curb violence and safeguard the community.

These new regulations follow a violent incident near Atuba, a Binduri suburb, where an assailant killed a man and set his body and motorcycle ablaze. Although the motive is not yet determined, security officials suspect a link to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.

This attack occurred shortly after Acting Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, visited the Bawku Naba, pledging support for peace initiatives and ensuring professional conduct by the police force.

In response, the Mamprugu Youth Association in Bawku has denounced the violence and appealed to the government to bolster security in Binduri. They are also urging the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahmoud Issifu, to take immediate action to address the rising insecurity.
