Joyce Bawah Mogtari Advocates for Youth Engagement in Agriculture to Drive National Development

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a Presidential Aide and Senior Advisor to former President John Dramani Mahama, is calling for a revitalization of the agricultural sector to make it more attractive to young people. During an interview with Woezor TV on April 20, Mogtari stressed the importance of youth involvement in farming as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods and national growth.

Mogtari believes transforming agriculture into a dynamic and appealing sector is essential for changing young people’s perceptions. “Our goal is to make agriculture sexier and more engaging for the youth to build something for themselves,” she stated.

Relying on insights from past governmental strategies, she proposed an approach under John Mahama that focuses on empowering young people by enabling them to tap into opportunities within the agricultural value chain. Mogtari emphasized agriculture’s potential for job creation and wealth generation, especially when supported with modern techniques and policies.

“It’s crucial for the youth to view agriculture not as a fallback option, but as a smart, innovative, and rewarding career path,” Mogtari added. Realizing this vision requires investments in tools, training, and a shift in both mindset and national priorities.

If Mahama were to return to power, Mogtari indicated that there would be a significant focus on youth-led agribusiness initiatives, increased access to credit, and improved market access. She urged young people to embrace this new vision for agriculture and assured them of former President Mahama’s commitment to creating youth-centered development policies.
