Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing safety concerns for his supporters. His decision follows a violent incident during the tour that led to the stabbing of a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The injured student, affiliated with Unity Hall’s Jama group, was performing at the tour event held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, Kumasi. The conflict arose when a wealthy friend of Agyapong’s, attending the event, gave money to the Jama group. Subsequently, armed individuals reportedly linked to the NPP intervened, forcibly taking the money.
The confrontation escalated with gunshots being fired, resulting in one member of the Jama group being stabbed. The injured student was quickly taken to the emergency department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he is now receiving treatment.
In light of the circumstances, Agyapong and his team have filed an official complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command. In a statement to the media on Wednesday, Agyapong expressed his decision to exit the tour, emphasizing the need to protect his team and pledging to seek justice for the victim. He stated, “Because of what happened yesterday, my team and I want to withdraw because lives are being threatened. I don’t think I can adequately protect my team. So we want out so that Dr. Bawumia can continue his campaign.”
