In recent news, the newly appointed Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, is under fire for his controversial comments regarding law enforcement in the city. His proposed measures to maintain order have drawn widespread criticism across Ghana.
During a press conference held on April 15, 2025, Mayor Boadi issued a stern warning that cattle found in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s jurisdiction would be seized and slaughtered. The meat would then be sent to feed inmates at Kumasi Central Prisons. Furthermore, he announced that traders selling on pavements and walkways would face corporal punishment, including flogging, starting from April 16, 2025.
These statements have provoked a strong backlash from politicians and public figures who consider the remarks reckless and inappropriate. Some are even calling for the mayor’s dismissal.
Public Outrage Over Leadership Concerns
Notable voices, such as Kwesi Pratt Jnr, Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, questioned the appointment process of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs). Pratt expressed shock over the mayor’s public declaration, stating, “The real concern is understanding how such a person could have been appointed to this significant position.”
Akosua Manu, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, shared similar sentiments. In her interview with ChannelOne News, she urged President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the mayor, labeling his actions as threats of physical assault, which contradict acceptable governance standards.
Amnesty International’s Reaction
Francis Nyantakyi, Board Chairman of Amnesty International Ghana, expressed his dismay over the mayor’s apparent disregard for the rule of law. In an interview with Joy FM, he emphasized that anyone in governance should prioritize the rule of law and protect human rights, as outlined in Ghana’s Constitution.
In closing, as Kumasi’s leader, Mayor Boadi faces mounting pressure to reassess his approach to maintaining city order in a way that aligns with democratic principles and respects citizens’ rights.
