Kumasi Officials Push for Cleanliness and Order as Business Resumes

In Kumasi, the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr. Richard Ofori Boadi, has called upon residents and local traders to prioritize cleanliness as the city transitions back to regular business operations following the Christmas period.

Mr. Boadi highlighted that the ongoing decongestion initiative in vital areas is aimed at fostering economic activities. He pointed out that illegal street vending and roadside encroachments are major contributors to the traffic congestion experienced in the city.

He stated, “Congestion not only hampers business efficiency and profit margins but also inhibits growth and exacerbates unemployment. Furthermore, unsanitary conditions threaten public health and disrupt daily life.”

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Mayor emphasized that maintaining high standards of sanitation and orderly conduct in business is crucial to sustaining a vibrant and healthy urban atmosphere. He expressed optimism that the combination of revitalized commercial activities and ongoing traffic and sanitation strategies would enhance economic performance in the forthcoming months.

Transport services in Kumasi have reported smoother traffic conditions on key routes, a development attributed to the resurgence of economic activities post-holidays. Shops have reopened, markets are thriving with activity, and public institutions, including banks, have returned to their standard operating hours.

Traders in popular markets such as Kejetia and Adum have observed a notable rise in customer visits since the beginning of the week, signaling the return to normal trading patterns after the festive season. Many businesses have also indicated a consistent increase in demand for their products and services, which is likely to boost their revenues in the early part of the year.

Commuter traffic is gradually improving, although congestion remains a challenge in certain high-traffic areas of the city. Both residents and business owners express hope that the continued enforcement of traffic regulations and sanitation measures will further enhance commercial conditions and the overall quality of life in Kumasi.

The security landscape in the metropolis has also seen enhancements, with a visible presence of law enforcement personnel in markets and on main thoroughfares, ensuring public safety. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Arthur Osei Akoto, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, urged citizens to maintain vigilance even after the holiday season, cautioning against potential criminal activities.

He encouraged the public to collaborate with the police as they strive to safeguard lives and property in the community.
