Kumawu MP Urges Ghana to Reject Electoral Violence to Protect Democracy and Human Rights

Ernest Yaw Anim, Chairman of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee and Member of Parliament for Kumawu, has appealed to all Ghanaians to shun electoral violence and misconduct to preserve democracy, uphold human rights, and promote sustainable national development.

Speaking in response to the disruptions that occurred during the Ablekuma North electoral rerun on July 11, 2025, involving 19 polling stations, Mr. Anim condemned the violent acts as a grave threat to Ghana’s democratic integrity. He emphasized that such disturbances violate both Ghanaian constitutional provisions and international legal frameworks protecting civil liberties.

Mr. Anim specifically referenced Article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and provisions in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which guarantee citizens’ rights to life, liberty, and personal security. He stated that electoral violence undermines these fundamental rights and damages the country’s reputation for peaceful and democratic electoral processes.

To prevent reoccurrence, the Kumawu MP urged a collective effort among the Government, political parties, security agencies, the National Peace Council, and the Electoral Commission to design and implement a comprehensive and effective electoral management system focused on maintaining peace and order during elections.

Praising the Ghana Police Service for initiating an investigation into the police commander accused of assaulting a journalist during the incident, Mr. Anim condemned the misconduct and affirmed the Human Rights Committee’s unwavering dedication to defending human rights, liberties, and dignity in Ghana.
