The British High Commission in Accra has officially launched the ambitious “London to Accra Economic Growth Campaign,” a dynamic initiative designed to strengthen economic collaboration between the United Kingdom and Ghana. This groundbreaking campaign leverages the vibrant British Ghanaian diaspora community, recognized as a critical asset in fostering trade, investment, and cultural exchange between the two nations.
The launch event was held at a vibrant reception attended by key dignitaries including the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, and the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey. Alongside them were over 100 entrepreneurs, investors, and stakeholders from both Ghanaian and UK business communities, highlighting the strong interest and support for deepening bilateral economic ties.
Far beyond a symbolic gesture, the London to Accra campaign aims to unlock new economic opportunities by amplifying the role of the British Ghanaian diaspora. This community acts as a vital bridge, fostering business innovation, cultural relations, and people-to-people connections that drive prosperity in both cities and countries. The campaign also seeks to increase awareness of various available support programs to assist entrepreneurs and investors looking to expand their trade and investment activities across the two capitals.
Following the launch, the campaign will feature several key activities: a series of informative webinars focused on UK-Ghana business opportunities; a digital storytelling initiative showcasing inspiring diaspora success stories; and a roadshow spotlighting diaspora-led businesses in Accra. The campaign’s crescendo will be the inaugural Diaspora Economic Growth Summit, scheduled for January 2026 in Accra, which aims to become a landmark event fostering ongoing diaspora economic collaboration.
Keith McMahon, Chargé d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Accra, emphasized the campaign’s significance: “The London to Accra campaign represents a practical strategy to support the UK’s growth mission. Our capitals share more than culture; economic links are expanding through entrepreneurs building companies bridging both cities, creating prosperity in both countries. Strengthening these pathways unlocks new investment and growth opportunities benefiting citizens on both sides.”
The launch event included a panel discussion with notable figures such as Kofi Otchere Darko, Ghana’s Director of Diaspora Affairs; Pamela Bassah, Head of Diaspora Relations and Strategic Partnerships at the British High Commission; Dr. Vanessa Apea, CEO of Accra London Health Centre; Giselle Agyare, Country Director of the UK Department for Business and Trade in Ghana; and Shirgade Laryea from the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce. The discussion highlighted key support mechanisms available through initiatives like Growth Gateway, reinforcing the commitment to empowering diaspora entrepreneurs.
This campaign builds on the momentum created by the annual Diaspora New Year Networking Mixer, which started in January 2023 and quickly became a pivotal event for the British Ghanaian community. The 2025 edition attracted over 500 participants from the diaspora, business sectors, and the Government of Ghana, underscoring the strong demand for enhanced UK-Ghana engagement.
