Mahama cautions citizens against online scammers during Cybersecurity Month

Mahama cautions citizens against online scammers as he launched this year’s National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NACSAM) in Accra. The President warned Ghanaians to stay alert to sophisticated fraud, romance scams, insider financial crimes, and hate speech, asserting that citizens must serve as the first line of defence in the country’s digital space.

He reminded Ghanaians that “your bank won’t call you, your telephone provider won’t call you and ask for your personal details.” He urged people to remain informed and cautious at all times. “If we all do our duty together, we can build a cyber-resilient country,” Mahama said.

The NACSAM theme this year is “Building a safe, informed and accountable digital space.” The launch event included a panel discussion involving industry experts, policymakers, and civil society, who explored emerging cyber threats and strategies to strengthen national resilience.

At the event, Mahama inaugurated an 18-member Joint Cybersecurity Committee (JCC) charged with coordinating the national fight against cyber threats.

Under the government’s RESET Ghana Agenda, Mahama named four flagship digital initiatives: the One Million Coders Programme, the Digital Jobs Initiative, a $50 million fintech growth fund, and a 24-Hour Economy policy grounded in digital resilience.

Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology & Innovations, underscored plans to strengthen Ghana’s cybersecurity infrastructure. He announced new Cybersecurity Emergency Response Teams (CERTs), a dedicated Cybersecurity Fund, a specialized cybercrime court, and a review of the Cybersecurity Act (2020).

The Interior Minister also reported that the Ghana Police Service has ramped up efforts in digital forensics, intelligence gathering, and international collaboration. In recent operations, authorities have arrested 68 suspected cybercriminals, identified 108 victims, and seized more than 885 electronic devices linked to illicit activity.
