In a significant diplomatic engagement, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres during the 39th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 14, 2026.
The discussions were primarily focused on the pressing security issues affecting Africa, particularly the escalating tensions in the Sahel region. Both leaders exchanged views on enhancing democratic governance across the continent, recognizing the interconnectedness of security and democracy.
Guterres acknowledged President Mahama’s impending role as chair of the African Union in 2027, praising Ghana’s proactive leadership within West Africa. The conversation highlighted the importance of regional peace and stability, with a specific emphasis on the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES), which is grappling with significant security challenges.
During their meeting, President Mahama briefed the UN Secretary-General on his ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at fostering peace in the troubled Sahel region. Guterres expressed the UN’s commitment to support Mahama’s efforts, underscoring Ghana’s pivotal role in tackling Africa’s most urgent issues as he prepares for his chairmanship.
As the meeting concluded, Secretary-General Guterres presented President Mahama with a special gift—a copy of the UN Charter, available in all six official languages of the United Nations, symbolizing the collaborative spirit of their discussions.
