A recent poll by Global InfoAnalytics indicates significant support for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo across various regions. Between April 7th and 16th, 2025, a diverse group of respondents, including Junior High School leavers, were surveyed.

Regional Support Highlights

– Western North and Bono Regions: Leading with 82% of participants backing the removal.- **Volta Region**: Close behind, with 76% in favor.
– Bono East and Oti Regions: 72% and 70% support respectively.
– Savannah Region: 66% support.
– Greater Accra and Central Regions: 58% and 51% respectively.
– Eastern and Upper West Regions: 48% and 49% in favor.

Lower Levels of Support

– Northern and North East Regions: Showed reduced support with 45% and 39% respectively.
– Ahafo and Ashanti Regions: Recorded the lowest support at 20% and 37%.

This data underscores regional differences, with stronger backing in northern and middle belt areas.

Legal and Political Developments

Efforts to unseat the Chief Justice face a legal challenge from Tafo’s Member of Parliament, Vincent Ekow Assafuah. He argues President John Mahama violated the constitution by referring removal petitions to the Council of State without notifying the Chief Justice. The Supreme Court has postponed the case to May 6.
