Mampong Traditional Council Demands Retraction of Anti-Ashanti Remarks from NDC Youth

The Ashanti Mampong Traditional Council, under the leadership of Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, has issued a strong directive to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership in the Mampong Constituency. The council demands that within 24 hours, the party retracts anti-Ashanti statements made by some of its youth members.

During a meeting on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Mamponghene’s palace, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II expressed his displeasure with the NDC supporters’ campaign against the nomination of an Ashanti candidate for the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) position. The Mamponghene urged the party to caution those responsible for these divisive actions.

The traditional leader emphasized the inclusivity and acceptance within the Ashanti region, noting that it is the only area in Ghana where other tribes are allowed to install their own chiefs. “We respect and treat everyone as equals,” he stated, questioning why some individuals were trying to sow discord among them.

The actions of the NDC youth stem from their opposition to the rumored appointment of Esther Dwomoh as MCE, preferring three long-time party loyalists instead: Yakubu Issifu, Mohammed Kamil, and Imoro Iddrisu. On April 9 and 10, the disgruntled youth vandalized party offices to protest Dwomoh’s nomination, citing her recent affiliation with the NDC.

Their stance, “no Ashanti will be allowed to become MCE of Mampong,” has been widely criticized as anti-Ashanti and disrespectful to the local landowners.

In response to the unrest, the NDC constituency leadership has expressed apologies and condemned the violence. They urge calm as they await President John Dramani Mahama’s final decision on the appointment.
