Microsoft is rolling out its AI-driven “Copilot+ Recall” tool, designed to automatically capture screen snapshots every few seconds. Currently available in preview mode, this feature is accessible to select users with Microsoft’s AI-enabled PCs and laptops.
Originally introduced last year, the feature was paused in 2024 due to privacy concerns. However, after successful trials with a handful of users, Microsoft is now expanding its deployment through the Windows Insider software testing program. The tech giant confirms that global availability is on the horizon, though users in the EU will have to wait until 2025 for access.
Opt-in is required for using Recall, and Microsoft assures users they can pause the snapshot function whenever they choose. The tool aims to help users effortlessly recall past activities such as files, photos, emails, and website visits. For instance, a user who spotted a dress online could leverage Recall to quickly find the site again.
Despite improvements, privacy advocate Dr. Kris Shrishak, who previously criticized Recall as a “privacy nightmare,” remains cautious. He points out that Recall could capture information about others without their consent, potentially storing images and messages from apps like WhatsApp.
This automated data capture mirrors the manual process of taking screenshots, raising concerns about storing private data indefinitely — likened to Signal’s disappearing messages being retained permanently. Dr. Shrishak also warns that malicious entities could exploit this data if they gain access to a device.
In response, Microsoft asserts that Recall does not share any snapshots or associated data with third parties, nor are they shared between different users. All images are stored locally, and users must verify their identity before accessing their snapshots. Additionally, users can control which apps Recall targets, with some browsers’ private modes excluded from capture. Users also have the option to delete stored screenshots.
The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is monitoring Microsoft on this matter, emphasizing the importance of transparency and proper use of personal data. The ICO highlights that companies must demonstrate compliance with data protection laws and that they will take action if users’ data protection rights are compromised.
