In a significant move against illegal mining, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has conducted a four-day training program in Sunyani, aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of 300 security personnel from various agencies across Ghana. This initiative emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and leadership to effectively address illegal mining activities.
The training was designed to prepare the task force for deployment across 21 locations in seven districts, ensuring a comprehensive approach to combating illegal mining. Col. Dominic Buah, the Director of Operations for NAIMOS, highlighted that the focus would include protecting vital water bodies and forest reserves, as well as addressing the involvement of foreign nationals in these unlawful activities.
During the opening ceremony, Bono Regional Minister Joseph Addae Akwaboa Esq. urged the participants to remain disciplined and coordinated, emphasizing that their success depends on their commitment to the training. He reminded the task force that they bear the responsibility of safeguarding the environment and restoring the dignity of Ghana’s natural resources.
The minister commended the efforts of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, led by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for their vital role in facilitating the training program and demonstrating the government’s determination to eradicate illegal mining. The collaboration among the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, National Investigations Bureau, Ghana Immigration Service, and National Narcotics Control Commission underscores a unified front against this pressing issue.
As the task force prepares for deployment, their mission encompasses not only law enforcement but also fostering community engagement to build trust and cooperation in the fight against illegal mining.
