The National Theatre Relaunches Music Education Department as part of a renewed commitment to promoting creative learning and cultural preservation in Ghana. The launch, held at the National Theatre in Accra on November 2, 2025, marks a significant milestone in revitalising the country’s performing arts education.
Acting Executive Director of the National Theatre, Herbert Malm, described the relaunch as an “artistic rebirth” that will connect young people to the nation’s musical heritage. He said the initiative aims to train emerging musicians, composers, and educators through structured programmes designed to nurture skill and discipline while celebrating Ghanaian creativity.
During the event, students and educators showcased piano recitals, choral singing, and drumming performances, illustrating how the department intends to blend traditional and modern music education. Malm explained that the department’s work will complement national education reforms by integrating music into school curricula and empowering teachers with professional support.
He further stated that the programme aligns with the government’s 24-Hour Economy vision by creating sustainable opportunities within the creative arts sector. Musicians, composers, and facilitators are expected to benefit from training and collaborations that expand access to jobs in the cultural economy.
According to the Theatre’s management, partnerships will also be established with schools and cultural organisations to build capacity, provide mentorship, and strengthen artistic innovation. The relaunch, they noted, signals a new era in Ghana’s creative development—where young people can view the arts not merely as hobbies but as viable professional pathways contributing to national growth and identity.
