In a recent discussion on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Anthony Nukpenu, the Eastern Regional Organiser for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), attributed the party’s recent by-election success to effective grassroots mobilization rather than any form of vote-buying or last-minute incentives.
Nukpenu emphasized that the party’s triumph reflects the electorate’s growing confidence in its organizational framework and strategies. He stated, “We engaged with residents directly, reminding them of their civic duties without resorting to any inducements.”
His remarks came in response to accusations from opposition parties alleging that the NDC had distributed food and cash to influence voter decisions. Nukpenu firmly denied these claims, asserting, “We did not distribute even a sachet of water, let alone rice or other items.”
Highlighting a shift in approach, he noted that the NDC intentionally steered clear of the usual practice of implementing development projects or providing material incentives during by-elections. “We aim to break the cycle where development appears only during election periods. Initiatives should be implemented based on community needs, not just because there is an upcoming vote,” he explained.
Nukpenu further stressed the importance of continuous political engagement, advocating for a transformation in the party’s grassroots operations. “We need to move beyond merely compiling lists for internal competitions. It’s crucial to have active members who are dedicated to daily community engagement and safeguarding the party’s reputation,” he remarked.
Concluding his statements, he asserted that the party’s victory exemplifies the success of door-to-door outreach and ongoing voter education, pledging to bolster these strategies in preparation for future elections.
