Nico Williams Pens Long-Term Deal with Athletic Club, Ends Barcelona Rumors
Athletic Club have confirmed that winger Nico Williams has agreed to a massive eight-year contract extension, keeping him at the San Mamés until 2035. The new deal shuts down months of speculation regarding a potential transfer to Barcelona.
The club announced the contract renewal on Friday, stating that Williams—who joined their academy in 2013—has committed his long-term future to the Basque side. The fresh agreement includes a significant increase in his release clause, which now climbs to nearly €80 million, over 50% more than in his previous contract.
In his statement following the announcement, the 21-year-old emphasized loyalty and belonging:
“When it comes to making decisions, the most important thing for me is to listen to my heart. I’m where I want to be, with my people—this is home.”
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano also reported that due to registration complications, a move to Barcelona is off the table for this summer, reinforcing Williams’ immediate commitment to Athletic Club.
