Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been officially named the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2028 elections, following a decisive victory in the party’s primaries. Despite this achievement, political tensions remain high, particularly with criticism emerging from opposition leaders.
During a parliamentary session, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga voiced strong disapproval of Bawumia’s nomination, asserting, “This is not a fresh start for Ghanaians; it merely represents a rebranding of the same political agenda that has led our nation into economic turmoil.” He emphasized that voters will not be swayed by superficial changes but will judge based on past experiences and the tangible outcomes of the administration.
Ayariga, donning white attire in a gesture of political irony, expressed his belief that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would triumph over Bawumia in the forthcoming elections. He stated, “I am here to celebrate with the NPP, but I assure you, the NDC will have the upper hand against Bawumia any day.”
In the recent NPP primaries, Bawumia received approximately 56.48% of the votes, totaling 110,645, while his closest rival, Kennedy Agyapong, garnered 42.08%, or 46,554 votes. This outcome solidifies Bawumia’s position as the party’s leading candidate, despite the criticisms he faces from opposition parties.
This political development comes at a critical time as Ghana prepares for significant electoral decisions. Both supporters and critics of Bawumia are closely monitoring how these dynamics will unfold as the election date approaches.
