In the 2024 elections, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, was the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Recently, he voiced strong criticism regarding President John Dramani Mahama’s handling of national issues, just three months into Mahama’s term.
During a social media interview, Dr. Prempeh conveyed his profound discontent with the current administration’s track record. He cited significant problems like recurring electricity shortages, rampant illegal mining activities (commonly referred to as galamsey), and an unexpected surge in drug smuggling and money laundering cases as indicators of poor governance.
Dr. Prempeh remarked, “The situation has deteriorated to the extent that I hesitate to assign a rating. We previously enjoyed reliable electricity, but what is happening now? Additionally, galamsey problems persist. We’ve witnessed a regression in tackling illicit drugs, with more cocaine seizures in these past three months than in the previous eight years.”
With President Mahama having taken office on January 7, 2025, early praise quickly turned to criticism amidst accusations of systemic drug smuggling and financial crimes, overshadowing the initial optimism regarding his leadership.
Despite his criticism, NAPO expressed his genuine hope for national progress, though he remains disheartened by the current direction.
