Vice-President Opoku-Agyemang attends Borlaug International Dialogue

Opoku-Agyemang attends Borlaug International Dialogue in the United States to represent Ghana at the 2025 Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue, held by the World Food Prize Foundation in Des Moines, Iowa. The Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Ghana’s efforts in food security, sustainable agriculture and inclusive agribusiness, joining other global leaders in discussions aimed at strengthening partnerships for agricultural transformation.

In preparing for the four-day event from October 21–24, Opoku-Agyemang will also engage in bilateral meetings with development partners and take part in a round-table session focused on innovation and agricultural resilience. Her participation underscores Ghana’s commitment to building resilient, inclusive and sustainable food systems that contribute to global food security.

During a previous event—the 2025 Global Gateway Forum—the Vice-President emphasised that Ghana aims to move beyond merely exporting raw cocoa beans. Instead, she said the country seeks to develop a value-added cocoa economy that empowers farmers and creates job opportunities. In line with that ambition, she called on the European Union Sustainable Cocoa Initiative and the Global Gateway Framework to invest in processing and rural industries.

Opoku-Agyemang further highlighted that new digital traceability systems are being rolled out within Ghana’s cocoa sector to ensure transparency, combat child labour and meet the demands of global markets. The introduction of such technologies, she said, signals a shift toward accountable, modern agriculture capable of meeting both national and international standards.

Observers say that Ghana’s presence at the Borlaug Dialogue aligns with its national agenda, which emphasises structural transformation, investment in agritech and the creation of vibrant agro-value chains. If the country consistently implements these policies, the dialogue could catalyse greater investment and partnerships for Ghana’s agricultural sector.
