Police Arrest 12 Suspects Over Highway Attacks in Ashanti Region

The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a notorious highway robbery syndicate, arresting 12 individuals believed to be behind a series of violent attacks on motorists across the Ashanti Region and its neighboring areas. The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the fight against crime in the region.

According to the police, the arrests were made during a series of coordinated operations conducted on March 12 and March 14, 2026. These operations spanned several towns, including Offinso, Nkenkaasu, Akomadan, Techiman, and Sunyani, known hotspots for highway robberies. The suspects were paraded at the Ashanti North Regional Police Headquarters in Asante Mampong on March 19, 2026.

ACP Felix Apedo, the regional commander, described many of the suspects as ‘hardened criminals’. Among those arrested were individuals with previous convictions or who were out on bail for other serious offenses. Notable among them is Seidu Fuseini, also known as Baali, an ex-convict released in 2022, and Dramani Rasak, who is out on bail for a murder case in Kumasi.

The police operation yielded a substantial haul of weapons and items believed to have been used in the robberies. Officers recovered three locally manufactured shotguns, one locally made pistol, nine live BB cartridges, four cutlasses, a sword, and two knives. Additionally, 41 mobile phones, some identified by victims of the robberies, were seized, along with black hooded outfits and a fertilizer bag used to conceal weapons.

Police allege that the syndicate was responsible for numerous highway attacks. Among them was a robbery on February 23, 2026, on the Nsuta-Hwidiem Old Junction Road, where armed men made away with GH₵57,000 and several mobile phones. Another reported incident involved an armed assault on a VIP bus carrying 49 passengers on the Kumasi-Techiman road, during which two female passengers were injured.

Authorities believe that the arrests have foiled planned attacks on other major roads, such as the Akomadan-Darso road. During police interrogations, the suspects reportedly confessed to other crimes, including robberies on the Mampong-Ejura Road, at Offinso Kokoti, and in Wenchi.

The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining law and order, stressing that efforts to curb highway robberies will continue unabated. The police are urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help prevent future crimes.

As the investigation continues, the police are working to ensure that all individuals involved in the syndicate are brought to justice. The community remains hopeful that these arrests will lead to a significant reduction in highway robberies, restoring a sense of safety and security to the region’s roads.
