The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a notorious highway robbery syndicate, arresting 12 suspects linked to a string of violent attacks on roads traversing the region. The arrests were the culmination of meticulously coordinated operations conducted on March 12 and March 14, 2026, across several towns, including Offinso, Nkenkaasu, Akomadan, Techiman, and Sunyani.
In a press parade at the Regional Police Headquarters in Asante Mampong on March 19, ACP Felix Apedo, the Ashanti North Regional Commander, announced the arrests. He detailed how the group allegedly terrorized motorists on major highways, instilling fear and causing significant disruptions to regional travel.
Among those apprehended are several known criminal figures, some of whom are ex-convicts with a history of violent criminal activities. This operation marks a significant step forward in the region’s ongoing battle against highway robberies, which have plagued commuters and disrupted local economies.
🔫 Weapons & Evidence Seized
The police operation netted a substantial cache of weapons and items, highlighting the group’s preparedness and organizational capacity. Seized items include:
- Three locally manufactured shotguns and one locally made pistol
- Nine live BB cartridges
- Four cutlasses, a sword, and two knives
- 41 mobile phones, some of which have been identified by previous victims
- Black hooded outfits, one stained with blood
- A fertilizer bag used to conceal the weapons
These discoveries underscore the group’s capability and intent to carry out armed highway attacks, posing a significant threat to road users.
ACP Apedo recounted a particularly harrowing incident on February 23, 2026, along the Nsuta–Hwidiem Old Junction Road. In this attack, armed men wielding shotguns and cutlasses ambushed commuters, making off with GH¢57,000 and several mobile phones. This incident, among others, galvanized the police’s resolve to dismantle the syndicate.
Community and Police Collaboration
The successful operation was made possible through the collaboration between the police and local communities, who provided crucial intelligence that helped track and apprehend the suspects. ACP Apedo emphasized the importance of such partnerships in maintaining regional security, urging communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
The arrests have been met with relief from residents and commuters, who hope this marks the beginning of safer travels across the Ashanti Region’s highways. The police have assured the public of their continued commitment to eradicating criminal activities and ensuring the safety of all road users.
Legal Proceedings and Future Measures
The suspects are currently in custody, with legal proceedings underway to ensure they face justice for their alleged crimes. The police have pledged to intensify patrols and surveillance on key highways, deploying more resources to prevent future occurrences of highway robberies.
As investigations continue, the police are also exploring links between this syndicate and other criminal networks operating in the region, aiming to dismantle any remaining threats to public safety. The dismantling of this group serves as a strong message to other criminal elements that law enforcement agencies are resolute in their efforts to maintain peace and security.
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command’s decisive action underscores the importance of strategic planning and community cooperation in tackling crime. Moving forward, the focus will remain on preventing such criminal activities and safeguarding the livelihoods and well-being of residents and travelers alike.
