The Ashanti South Regional Police Command successfully thwarted a planned armed robbery on December 31, 2025, following credible intelligence that indicated a group of robbers was preparing to ambush unsuspecting travelers along the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta road.
On January 5, 2026, the police reported that their swift intervention led to a confrontation with four armed individuals who opened fire on the officers before attempting to flee into the nearby bush. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two suspects were injured.
The injured suspects, later identified as Usmaro Mohammed and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw, were taken to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival.
During a thorough search of the scene, police recovered an AK-47 rifle with 15 rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun containing four BB cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a black bag filled with 16 live cartridges. Additionally, a Toyota VOXY vehicle, suspected to have been used by the robbers, was impounded by authorities.
According to police sources, the suspects are believed to be linked to several robbery incidents in the regions of Manso and Obuasi, including a notorious gold heist in Mpohor, a highway robbery at Nyinahini, and a cocoa shed robbery in Sefwi. Investigators have also indicated that the suspects had accomplices operating from areas such as Mankranso, Tamale, and Brekum, whose identities remain undisclosed and are currently at large.
Ongoing investigations aim to apprehend these remaining suspects and ascertain the ownership of the confiscated vehicle, as law enforcement continues to address the rising threat of organized crime in the region.
