On Friday, a significant discovery of ammunition was made by police on a commercial bus headed to Benin. During an early morning security check on April 18, 2025, at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police barrier in the Volta Region, authorities intercepted the concealed weapons.

The police statement from the Public Affairs Unit detailed the stop of a Hyundai bus, with registration number GR 8246-Q, traveling from Accra to Benin. A thorough search revealed 60 cartons of AAA cartridges containing 15,000 rounds, along with 72 cartons of BB cartridges totaling 18,000 rounds, hidden in sacks beneath passengers’ luggage.

The bus driver, 45-year-old Abasou Fousseni, and his co-driver, 38-year-old Salisu Jalilu, were immediately taken into custody. Both men claimed ignorance of the concealed ammunition, suspected to be part of a smuggling operation. Preliminary investigations identified the co-driver as the individual responsible for loading the ammunition onto the vehicle.

While the driver has been released on bail to ensure passengers reach their destination, the co-driver remains in custody for further investigation. He is scheduled to appear in court on April 22, 2025.

Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the origin and intended recipients of the ammunition.
