Police Neutralize Armed Robber in Atebubu–Ejura Highway Shootout

The Ghana Police Service has successfully neutralized a suspected armed robber during a dramatic shootout along the Atebubu–Ejura highway, a notorious route in the Bono East and Ashanti regions known for frequent criminal activities. The incident, which underscores the ongoing battle between law enforcement and armed gangs, occurred late on the night of March 25, 2026.

According to police reports, the shootout unfolded around 11:10 p.m. during a routine patrol by officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID). As the patrol vehicle approached a section of the highway near Kasei, they encountered a group of approximately five individuals who are suspected to be part of a robbery syndicate.

The suspects, armed and dangerous, attempted to halt the police vehicle using flashlights. The situation quickly escalated as the suspects opened fire, prompting an immediate response from the officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, one suspect was shot and killed, while the others managed to flee into the dense surrounding bushes.

Despite efforts to save the injured suspect’s life, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The deceased was found in possession of several items that pointed to his involvement in criminal activities, including a single-barrel gun, live and spent cartridges, multiple mobile phones, a machete, personal belongings, and over GH¢300 in cash.

The police have identified the suspect as a member of a larger robbery syndicate that has been terrorizing travelers along the Atebubu–Ejura highway. This group has been linked to a series of violent robberies, including a recent attack on March 14, 2026, where they reportedly fired into a moving vehicle, injuring a passenger.

In response to these threats, the Ghana Police Service has intensified its efforts to dismantle such criminal networks. Operations are actively underway to apprehend the remaining suspects who managed to escape the recent confrontation. This shootout is part of a broader strategy to enhance security and ensure the safety of travelers in the Ashanti and Bono East regions, where highway robberies have been a persistent issue.

The police have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining law and order, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in providing information that could lead to the arrest of the culprits. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging residents and travelers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

This latest incident highlights the escalating efforts by security agencies to combat highway robbery in Ghana. With intensified patrols and strategic crackdowns, the police aim to restore confidence among road users and disrupt the operations of criminal gangs threatening the peace and safety of the region.

As the Ghana Police Service continues its crackdown on highway criminals, the message is clear: law enforcement remains resolute in its mission to protect citizens and dismantle criminal enterprises that threaten public safety.
