Power Outages Disrupt Life in Sunyani Due to Transformer Malfunction

Residents and businesses in Sunyani, located in the Bono Region, are grappling with extensive power outages that have significantly disrupted daily activities and economic operations. This situation, which began on January 20, 2026, has left numerous neighborhoods, including Zinco, Airport, Wawasua, and several others, in darkness.

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has responded to the crisis by implementing a temporary eight-hour power management schedule. This decision comes as businesses, particularly those relying on refrigeration, have reported substantial losses due to the erratic electricity supply. Bernice Ofei, a local cold store operator, expressed her frustration, stating that the consistent power interruptions have resulted in spoilage and increased operational costs.

In a press briefing, NEDCo officials explained that the outages stem from a technical fault in Transformer Two (T2), a critical component of the local power distribution system. Sunyani Area Manager Ing. Eugene Odoi Addo detailed that the malfunction occurred shortly after 4 PM GMT on the day of the incident when an unusual noise was detected, followed by smoke and oil leakage from the transformer.

To mitigate the impact on essential services, NEDCo has managed to restore approximately 42 percent of the 11 kV load to key areas. While efforts are underway to fully address the fault, the company is prioritizing the supply of electricity to critical installations, aiming to minimize disruptions for residents and businesses alike.
