In a significant move set to transform the transportation landscape of the Bono Region, President John Mahama has officially commenced the construction of a new Sunyani Airport at Nsoatre. This initiative, part of his Resetting Ghana Tour, marks a decisive step towards enhancing regional connectivity and spurring economic growth.
During a formal ceremony attended by government officials, traditional leaders, and local residents, President Mahama emphasized the limitations of the existing Sunyani Airport. ‘The current runway, stretching approximately 1.5 kilometers, restricts the types of aircraft that can land here,’ he stated. ‘Moreover, due to surrounding developments, expanding this runway is not a feasible option.’
The decision to relocate and build a new facility was made in collaboration with traditional leaders, who have been instrumental in securing the new site at Nsoatre. The new airport will feature a runway extending 2.4 kilometers, capable of accommodating larger aircraft and thereby improving air connectivity for the region.
President Mahama highlighted that the new airport project is not just an isolated development but a part of broader efforts to revitalize transport infrastructure across the country. ‘This project is pivotal for the Bono Region as it aims to position it as a key hub for trade and investment,’ he explained. ‘Enhanced air connectivity will attract businesses, stimulate tourism, and create job opportunities.’
The construction of the new airport is expected to bring numerous benefits to the local economy. Improved air transport facilities will facilitate the movement of goods and people, thereby boosting local businesses and attracting foreign investment. Additionally, the project is poised to enhance the region’s appeal as a tourism destination, offering easier access for domestic and international visitors.
Community leaders have expressed their support for the project, anticipating that the new airport will bring much-needed development to the area. Nana Kofi Badu, a prominent traditional leader, remarked, ‘This development is a testament to the government’s commitment to our region. We are confident it will bring prosperity and growth.’
As part of the Resetting Ghana Tour, President Mahama’s focus on infrastructure development underscores his administration’s broader agenda to modernize the nation’s transport systems. ‘Our goal is to ensure that every region is interconnected, facilitating seamless movement and fostering economic integration,’ he commented.
The new Sunyani Airport at Nsoatre is set to become a cornerstone in the region’s development strategy, promising to unlock new opportunities and drive economic progress. As construction begins, the anticipation builds among stakeholders and residents alike, eager to witness the transformation this project will undoubtedly bring.
