The National Conference of Principals of Colleges of Education in Ghana (PRINCOF) has issued a call for calm and dialogue in response to recent demands from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG). UTAG has been vocal about its desire for the resignation of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) Director-General, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, along with his Deputy, Prof. Augustine Ocloo.
In a statement released on February 2, 2026, signed by its General Secretary Dr. Samuel Addae-Boateng, PRINCOF expressed concern over the current situation and urged all involved parties to engage in a thoughtful and measured approach to the ongoing issues.
While acknowledging the concerns voiced by UTAG branches within traditional universities, PRINCOF emphasized that the public ultimatums and threats of industrial action are counterproductive and require careful consideration. They believe that such disputes regarding leadership and governance in the tertiary education sector should be resolved through constructive dialogue rather than confrontational tactics.
PRINCOF’s statement highlighted the importance of resolving grievances through established channels, including the Ministry of Education and the GTEC Governing Board. They posited that these formal platforms foster collaborative problem-solving and can help mitigate unnecessary tensions.
“The imposition of deadlines and similar strategies tends to heighten tensions and can threaten the stability of our educational institutions,” the statement cautioned. Furthermore, PRINCOF noted its history of collaboration with GTEC under the current leadership, describing their administration as open and approachable.
The conference concluded by appealing for a calm atmosphere among all stakeholders, emphasizing the necessity of protecting the integrity of Ghana’s tertiary education system. “It is crucial for all parties to seek reasoned dialogue at this juncture. We must unite—government, regulators, and educators—to address concerns in a manner that safeguards our education system and fosters national development,” the statement asserted.
