The incident happened on Sunday after the man allegedly got into an argument with his partner, who is also the mother of the children, police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.
A 33-year-old father allegedly used petrol to burn down his house in Ga-Masemola, outside Polokwane, leading to the death of his three children, aged between four and six.
The deceased were identified as Mogau Maela, Chantelle Makobe, Mosa Makobe, and the father Thato Maela. The man also died in the fire, Limpopo police say.
Cases of arson, three counts of murder, attempted murder and an inquest were opened for further investigation.
Ngoepe said the motive behind the incident was still not clear domestic violence could not be ruled out. They swiftly responded, together with emergency medical services.
“Fortunately, the partner managed to flee from the suspect unhurt,” Ngoepe said.
On arrival, the EMS certified the three children and the suspect dead.”
That was when the police were alerted about the incident.
