Sunyani MCE Seeks GH¢900,000 in Defamation Lawsuit Against Ex-Assemblyman

Vincent Antwi Agyei, the Municipal Chief Executive of Sunyani, has initiated legal proceedings against former assembly member Raphael Cubagee, seeking damages amounting to GH¢900,000 for alleged defamatory statements made on social media. The lawsuit was formally filed at the Sunyani High Court on December 18, 2025, by attorney Alexander Amponsah of Adom Legal Consult.

The action stems from a series of posts by Cubagee, who has been suspended from his assembly role since July 2025. These posts allegedly accuse Agyei of engaging in corrupt practices and criminal behavior, undermining his integrity as a public servant. The legal team argues that these statements are not only false but also detrimental to Agyei’s reputation.

In the complaint, Amponsah demands that Cubagee retract his statements, remove the offending posts from Facebook, and issue a public apology. Furthermore, the lawsuit seeks an injunction to prevent any future defamatory remarks against Agyei.

The contested posts, published between October and December 2025, include severe allegations concerning the misappropriation of public funds and misconduct. Notably, one post claims that the cost of painting a single bungalow could reflect extensive theft, suggesting Agyei should face investigation by the Special Prosecutor. Other posts call for the removal of Agyei and Amponsah from their positions, labeling them as thieves and corrupt officials.

Amponsah refutes these claims, asserting that they are designed to incite public animosity against Agyei. He emphasizes that the allegations lack factual support and are rooted in malice. Agyei denies any involvement in the projects mentioned in Cubagee’s accusations, insisting that the claims are baseless.

The legal battle comes after Cubagee’s suspension due to various counts of misconduct, including unauthorized recording of meetings and making unfounded allegations against other officials. His past role on the assembly’s works committee raised questions about possible conflicts of interest related to the allegations.

Legal experts indicate that a ruling in favor of Agyei could establish significant legal precedents regarding accountability for defamatory content shared on social media platforms. As of now, a hearing date has not yet been set by the Sunyani High Court, and the case could take considerable time to resolve.

Despite these legal challenges, Agyei’s office remains committed to serving the residents of Sunyani. In a statement, Amponsah’s team expressed their determination to uphold the truth and hold Cubagee accountable for the damage caused by his statements.
