Supreme Court Adjourns Application on Chief Justice’s Impeachment Indefinitel

Supreme Court Adjourns Application on Chief Justice’s Impeachment Indefinitel
The Supreme Court has indefinitely adjourned an application seeking to suspend the process that may lead to the removal of the Chief Justice.

The application, filed by Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, requests an injunction to halt the impeachment process until the court determines the constitutionality of the proceedings.

During the hearing, a five-member panel led by Justice Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu announced the adjournment following a request from the Office of the Attorney-General. The Attorney-General had written to the Chief Justice, seeking a postponement of all cases involving his office for the week due to an ongoing conference of State Attorneys in Accra.

Although the panel was aware of the situation, State Attorney Reginald Odoi appeared in court to formally deliver the request. He explained that he had been instructed to present it in person, in respect of the Supreme Court.

Counsel for the applicant, former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, raised concerns about the postponement, questioning why the Attorney-General or his deputy would miss a significant constitutional case due to the conference. He found the situation unusual and urged the court to reschedule the hearing at the earliest possible date.

However, the court clarified that it had no authority to set a new date, as the request was directed to the Chief Justice. Justice Mensa-Bonsu ruled that the matter would be referred to the Chief Justice for scheduling, thus adjourning the case sine die (indefinitely).
