Suspension of CJ political agenda – Suame MP

Suame MP John Darko has openly criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, suggesting it is not a matter of legal necessity but rather a political maneuver by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Darko disputes the Constitution’s Article 146(6), used in this suspension following the Council of State’s advice on a prima facie case against the Chief Justice, viewing it as an attack on judicial independence.

During an interview on Channel One TV on Saturday, May 3, Darko expressed his concerns, stating, “We are merely skirting the issue. We can discuss the law, the Ghana Bar Association, and other legal entities, but the crux for me is that this suspension undermines the judiciary’s independence, especially with the NDC’s public support.”

Emphasizing his point, Darko insisted that the decision is politically motivated, not legally justified. “At its core, this is about politics. There’s no legal basis for it. Discussions around executing Article 143 are moot; what’s clear is the political agenda orchestrated by the NDC,” he concluded.
