Taxi Driver Arrested After Attempted Bribery During Drug Bust

In a significant law enforcement operation, a taxi driver was taken into custody in the Volta Region after allegedly attempting to bribe police officers with GH¢5,000 while transporting suspected illegal narcotics.

The incident unfolded on January 31, when police received a tip-off regarding the driver, identified as Innocent Kpeglo, 36, who was reportedly carrying illicit drugs from Dzolokpuita to Ho. Acting on this information, the Ho West District Police set up surveillance to intercept the suspect.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rockson Gyasi, the district commander, explained that officers spotted the suspect’s Opel taxi cab early in the morning around 5:57 AM. In a bid to evade capture, Kpeglo attempted to create an impression of mechanical failure by opening the vehicle’s bonnet. However, upon confrontation, he quickly confessed to transporting the narcotics to a contact in Aflao.

During the interaction, Kpeglo offered the officers a bribe of GH¢5,000 in hopes of avoiding prosecution. DSP Gyasi stated that the officers did not accept the bribe and instead proceeded with a thorough search of the vehicle at the Anyirawase Police Station.

This search yielded 37 parcels of dried leaves, believed to be marijuana, which were confiscated as evidence. The Opel taxi, registered under CR 675-12, was impounded, and Kpeglo was placed in custody for further questioning.

Following the initial arrest, the suspect was transferred to the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho, where he is currently being processed for court on charges related to narcotic possession.
