Another Violent Outbreak in Nkwanta Leaves Two Youths Critically Injured
Tensions remain high in the Nkwanta South Municipality of Ghana’s Oti Region following another violent incident that has left two Konkomba youths severely wounded.
The victims, Ujakpa Nakoja and Niyasangma Joseph, both residents of the farming community of Pawa, were reportedly shot by unidentified assailants at Abrewankor Junction, a known tension spot near the outskirts of the town.
They were rushed to St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Village, both located within Nkwanta South, for emergency medical care.
Calls for Calm as Leaders Urge Dialogue Over Retaliation
This attack has intensified fear across the municipality and sparked renewed appeals from notable Konkomba figures for calm and peaceful resolution.
Among those calling for restraint are:
-
Dr. Joshua Makubu, former Oti Regional Minister
-
DSP Daniel Machator, former Deputy Superintendent of Prisons
-
Ubor Tassan Konja VI, Chief of Kpassa (Kpassa-Wura)
These leaders strongly condemned the act of violence and urged community members to refrain from retaliation, emphasizing the need for law enforcement to handle the matter.
“Let peace prevail. Let us choose dialogue over war,” they stated.
They highlighted the interwoven heritage and peaceful coexistence historically shared between Konkomba and other ethnic groups such as the Adele, Challa, and Akyode people.
Tribal Conflict’s Growing Toll
This incident follows closely on the heels of recent violence that led to the closure of Nkwanta Senior High School after the death of a student during tribal clashes.
Local and national leaders fear the worsening situation could trigger broader unrest if not swiftly and carefully managed.
They’ve urged residents to allow state authorities to investigate and bring those responsible to justice, rather than resorting to vigilante responses that risk more innocent lives.
