The Era of Unqualified Athletes and Officials Representing Ghana Is Over — Chief of Staff

Ghana has ended the era of unqualified athletes and officials representing the country in international sports. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah said only skilled and certified professionals will now represent Ghana abroad.

Speaking at the launch of Ghana’s baton for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Debrah said the government is raising standards in the sports sector. He explained that every athlete, coach, and team official must complete approved training before joining national squads.

He stated that Ghana’s poor performance in global events came from a lack of proper preparation. The new policy seeks to fix that issue. According to him, performance will depend on merit, not personal or political connections.

Debrah praised sports legends like Azumah Nelson, Joshua Owusu, and Ignatius Gaisah for setting high standards. He urged young athletes to follow their example. The baton, designed by Albert Obidiaba, carries a message from King Charles III promoting peace and unity.

The Chief of Staff added that the government is working with the Ghana Olympic Committee and other institutions to ensure proper selection. After the event, a procession moved through Accra, involving security heads, students, and traditional leaders.

Ghana now focuses on integrity, discipline, and skill in sports. The government says the days of unqualified representation are officially over.
