Tullow Oil and Eni Resume Offshore Drilling in Ghana, Boosting Energy Sector

In a significant development for Ghana’s energy industry, Tullow Ghana Ltd, along with its Jubilee partners, and Eni Ghana, with its Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) collaborators, have recommenced offshore drilling activities. This update comes after the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in conjunction with the Petroleum Commission, officially approved their drilling programs aimed at rejuvenating the nation’s upstream petroleum sector after a long lull.

Renewed Investor Confidence

The resumption of drilling activities is a positive indicator of renewed investor confidence in Ghana’s petroleum sector. The Ministry highlighted that the ongoing operations by Eni and Jubilee partners will not only sustain oil production but also enhance operational efficiency in these key fields. This restoration of drilling activities aligns with the government’s strategic direction for Ghana’s energy future.

Upcoming Drilling Projects

Tullow Ghana has engaged the Noble Venturer Drillship, currently in Ghanaian waters, to drill the JBE-P well in the Jubilee South-East area. This well is part of the Jubilee Full Field Development project and is slated for completion within 60 days. Initial production is expected to reach 2,800 barrels of oil per day (bopd) by the third quarter of 2025, scaling up to 4,500 bopd in 2026.

Similarly, Eni Ghana is commencing its latest drilling initiative with the SNKE-1X ST2 well in the Sankofa field, targeting the Cenomanian reservoir. The anticipated production from this well is set to bolster oil output significantly starting in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Community Engagement Efforts

To prepare for these drilling activities, both Tullow and Eni have been proactive in engaging stakeholders along Ghana’s coastline. This initiative involved collaboration with approximately 1,000 fishermen and local leaders to ensure transparent communication and foster positive relationships with coastal communities.
