Unraveling the Tensions in Bawku
Bawku, a region predominantly occupied by the Kusasis and Mamprusis ethnic groups, has long been a hotbed of conflict. This discord stems from longstanding historical tensions, competition for limited resources, and deep-seated political rivalries.
Despite ongoing efforts to bring peace, attempts at resolution have often been thwarted, allowing conflicts to flare up repeatedly. These escalations have resulted in significant loss of life and destruction of property, with reports indicating that the clashes have claimed around 300 lives and led to the devastation of numerous properties.
Former Upper East Regional Minister, Tangoba Abayage, who has witnessed the persistent clashes, recently reflected on the turmoil through a social media post. In her message, she highlighted the history of the conflict and the numerous initiatives that have attempted, and failed, to restore peace.
Notable Incidents in the History of the Bawku Conflict
Abayage recounted key incidents, including:
– The torching of Hon. Hawa Yakubu’s house
– An attack on President Kufuor’s vehicle
– An assault on Mark Wonyongo’s entourage
– Multiple attacks targeting security forces
– The attack on Ayariga’s house
– Assaults on the vehicle of the Inspector General of Police (IGP)
These incidents form part of a long history of unrest, emphasizing the need for a pragmatic, unbiased approach to resolving the Bawku conflict. Although the path to peace remains uncertain, Abayage expressed her hope for a lasting solution through collaborative and innovative strategies.
As these efforts continue, the people of Bawku and stakeholders across the broader region remain committed to finding a peaceful path forward.
