Starting Monday, May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer function on certain older Android and iPhone models, following Meta’s decision to update the app’s operating system compatibility requirements. These changes mean that devices unable to meet the new minimum operating system standards will be unsupported, effectively making the app unusable on these smartphones.
According to a report by Metro UK, users with affected devices will receive multiple notifications prompting them to upgrade before the deadline. Meta emphasizes that these updates are crucial for maintaining WhatsApp’s security and enhancing performance on newer devices.
Affected Devices Include:
– iPhones released in 2013 and 2014
– Android phones unable to update to Android 5.0 (Lollipop), including certain models from Samsung, LG, HTC, and Sony
– Some KaiOS feature phones
Many of the listed Android devices are running KitKat (Android 4.4), which had already been deemed outdated for WhatsApp in an earlier update on January 1, 2025. However, some models may still be eligible for an upgrade to Lollipop (Android 5.0) or newer.
