Why King Paluta’s ‘Makoma’ Missed Out on a TGMA Nomination

Why King Paluta’s ‘Makoma’ Missed Out on a TGMA Nomination

The Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Board has clarified the absence of King Paluta’s track ‘Makoma’ from this year’s nominations, dispelling rumors of profanity being the reason. In a press release, Robert Klah, Head of Communications and Public Events at Charterhouse, explained the decision.

The statement emphasized a key rule: “Each artist may have only one song per category, except in the cases of Best Collaboration, Best International Collaboration, and Best Music Video.” This regulation is designed to prevent vote-splitting and maximize an artist’s chances of winning.

King Paluta’s tracks ‘Aseda’ and ‘Makoma’ were put under scrutiny as the organizers applied this rule, opting for ‘Aseda’ due to its greater popularity determined through research, streaming figures, and airplay data from 175 radio stations. Consequently, ‘Aseda’ received nominations in the Highlife and Most Popular Song of the Year categories.

The TGMA Board has occasionally relaxed this rule in past editions, but it has now reaffirmed the one-song-per-artist-per-category policy. This approach is not new; in 2016, the rule was similarly applied to Bisa Kdei’s hits. Although ‘Mansa’ and ‘Brother Brother’ were both popular, only ‘Mansa’ was nominated after Kdei was advised to choose his top track.

In recent years, the Board temporarily allowed multiple songs from a single artist in a category. However, the latest announcement indicates a return to the original rule, ensuring clarity and fairness in the selection process.

This streamlined approach aims to maintain consistency and integrity in the TGMA nominations process, benefiting both artists and their fans.
